'Australian Locomotive Rosters' was first started by Brad Peadon and Daven Walters in 2000. It took the form of a book that we had published through Railmac. This website is compiled by Brad Peadon, in a joint effort with Bradly Coulter and Daven Walters. Recently we trialed some fleetlists on the main 'Semi Retired Foamer' website. Such was the popularity, we have decided to move them to their own site. Initially, we will be sticking with the SRF theme of covering locomotive types that were around in the 80s and 90s. This may be expanded in the future.

Now Open: 'Australian Locomotive Rosters' group. This will be a contributor only group to both share latest fleet changes and help us to update..

Candy Livery

 Locomotive Livery Profiles

 SRA Candy Livery

Written: Brad Coulter

Website: Brad Peadon

Dedicated To Ian McIntyre

The newly established State Rail Authority of NSW and been formed in 1981 superseding the former NSWR, they wanted a new image mainly brought on by the success of the visual impact that the XPT had on the public, the SRA wanted something similar of all their trains.

In late 1981, the SRA appointed ‘Phil Belbin’ to the project of designing this new image, under the direction of the Chief Executive ‘David Hill’ & the chief mechanical engineer ‘John Brew’, work commenced on designing and ironing out a new livery with a good visibility safety level.

Finally after 120 colour concepts were prepared and narrowed down to the chosen livery, known as the Candy livery (or other names Belbin or lollipop)

The scheme was an all over red body with a thin yellow stripe atop a thicker orange stripe atop a White stripe, with black under gear, and initially a silver roof (later grey, white, then all over red depending on the class).

The 1st item of rollingstock to see the light of day in this new livery was Economy class a/c carriage SFS2277 painted at Eveleigh Carriage Works in Mid July 1982.

The livery was officially released at 11.30am on 17th August 1982 at the public unveiling held on platform5 of Sydney Terminal – 44100, FH2230, SFS2277, TFX1935, MHS819, MHO2636 were displayed on this day.

The Candy scheme lasted as the main livery till 1992 when replaced by the Freight Rail blue livery, although from 1988 a simplified version known as the red terror livery (see future blog post) emerged from Cardiff workshops applied to 4469, this scheme omitted the yellow & orange stripes, thus reducing the amount of time required to paint the units, and was used mainly on non front line locomotives (44, 45, 48, 49 classes), other locos of the 422, 442, 80, 81’s continued to receive the full candy livery.

During the 10 years that the Candy livery was the prominent livery the following locomotives carried this scheme.

Now, prepare yourselves for 107 delicious servings of candy.

Preserved 42103 'Chubster' is the newest locomotive to wear the candy livery.
This diversion from the endless line of dreary Indian Red locomotives makes a very refreshing change, one that will hopefully be repeated on other locomotives, and Mr Jackson's DEB set, in the future.
