Eleven units rolled out for Western Australia’s narrow-gauge empire, mostly hauling heavy mineral trains in the south-east. In 1982–83, the first four ditched their old vacuum brakes for shiny Westinghouse air brakes and re-emerged as the NA class. Crews loved their comfy ride and decent grunt, but reliability wasn’t exactly their strong suit. Most bowed out in the early ’90s, with the final stragglers retiring in 1997.
